Metabolic Rates at Different Oxygen Levels Determined by Direct and Indirect Calorimetry in the Oxyconformer Sipunculus Nudus

چکیده
Oxygen uptake and the mode of energy production in Sipunculus nudus L. were determined at different oxygen levels by means of direct and indirect calorimetry. Oxygen consumption declined linearly with decreasing ambient POr A similar decrease in heat production was observed down to a Po2 of 8.66 kPa. At lower oxygen tensions, a discrepancy between aerobic and total heat production indicated the onset of anaerobic metabolism. The occurrence of the critical POl between 8.66 and 2.66 kPa was confirmed by estimation of anaerobic end products in the body wall musculature. The contributions of aerobic and anaerobic metabolism to total ATP production were determined at a Po2 of 2.66 kPa and were found to be 48 and 52 %, respectively. Measured heat dissipation under extreme hypoxia (Po2 nominally zero) (21.5±3.5mJh~ g~) agreed with the enthalpy changes calculated from the rates of formation of anaerobic end products (17.9±4.7mJh~g~). For the sake of redox balance maintenance, saturation of fatty acids was assumed; this would be accompanied by an additional heat production of 3.3mJh^'g", so that the total calculated enthalpy change amounted to 21. 1 1

Changes in metabolic rate and N excretion in the marine invertebrate Sipunculus nudus under conditions of environmental hypercapnia: identifying effective acid-base variables.
Increased CO(2) partial pressures (hypercapnia) as well as hypoxia are natural features of marine environments like the intertidal zone. Nevertheless little is known about the specific effects of CO(2) on metabolism, except for the well-described effects on acid-base variables and regulation. Accordingly, the sediment-dwelling worm Sipunculus nudus was used as an experimental model to investiga...
متن کاملModulation of the cost of pHi regulation during metabolic depression: a (31)P-NMR study in invertebrate (Sipunculus nudus) isolated muscle.
Extracellular acidosis has been demonstrated to play a key role in the process of metabolic depression under long-term environmental stress, exemplified in the marine invertebrate Sipunculus nudus. These findings led to the hypothesis that acid-base regulation is associated with a visible cost depending on the rate and mode of H(+)-equivalent ion exchange. To test this hypothesis, the effects o...
متن کاملSipunculus nudus Linnaeus, 1766 (Sipuncula): cosmopolitan or a group of pseudocryptic species? An integrated molecular and morphological approach
Sipunculan taxonomy relies on a limited set of external morphological and internal anatomical characters. In addition, this marine group is characterized by an unusual large number of putatively cosmopolitan species. However, this ‘cosmopolitan’ status could be an artifact of their conserved morphology and the small number of unambiguous taxonomic characters available for delimiting species. Sp...

متن کاملEffects of environmental hypercapnia on animal physiology: a 13C NMR study of protein synthesis rates in the marine invertebrate Sipunculus nudus.
Global climate change is associated with a progressive rise in ocean CO(2) concentrations (hypercapnia) and, consequently, a drop in seawater pH. However, a comprehensive picture of the physiological mechanisms affected by chronic CO(2) stress in marine biota is still lacking. Here we present an analysis of protein biosynthesis rates in isolated muscle of the marine invertebrate Sipunculus nudu...
